Vietnamese agricultural products "thirsty" for cold storage

The country currently has nearly 100 cold storage facilities with a total capacity of about 1.3 million tons. This number is still quite modest compared to actual demand.

Investment in cold storage and warehouses for preserving agricultural products is also limited. There are places with too many projects, and there are also localities that have not found a modern cold storage with the capacity to receive and preserve export goods.
Every month, Uyen Diep Vietnam Durian Cooperative purchases and exports thousands of tons of fresh durian. In the near future, the unit plans to process more frozen goods. However, finding land for cold storage at this time is not easy.
Mr. Nguyen Tien Diep - Director of Uyen Diep Vietnam Durian Cooperative said: "Enterprises are searching, buying, and building by themselves, there is no planning for warehouses for the durian industry. Enterprises want to be planned at a certain stage for production and separation according to standards".
In the Southern region, there are about 65 cold storages with a capacity of less than 1 million tons, mainly concentrated in Long An, Binh Duong and Ho Chi Minh City... Meanwhile, in the agricultural granary of the country and the world such as the Mekong Delta, there is a lack of such projects.
Just counting the fruit and vegetable industry in our country, each year, the harvest output reaches more than 15 million tons. While the total capacity of cold storages is less than 2 million tons. This number is quite lame compared to actual demand.
Not only is there a systematic planning, but incentives on land costs, electricity, water, credit... should also be implemented soon to attract businesses to invest heavily in this field.
