Q&A – Questions & Answers

Irradiation

What is irradiation?
In order to ensure hygiene and safety of products and food, irradiation is a method of utilizing ionizing radiation to sterilize cargos. Nowadays, a large number of countries around the world are using this technology to store and preserve over 40 different kinds of products, such as fruits, vegetables, cereal, fishes, meals, poultry, medical equipment, etc.
What is the purpose of Food Irradiation?
Protecting food from foodborne illness (or food poisoning): if used effectively, irradiation can kill germs that can cause food poisoning, such as Salmonella and Escherichia coli. Preserving: irradiation can be used to remove or inactivate microorganisms that cause food spoilage and decomposition, and prolongs the shelf life of foods. Pest control: irradiation can be used to kill pests inside or on the surface of fruits. Irradiation helps to reduce the impact of other pest controls that can damage fruits. Inhibition of germination and ripening: irradiation can be used to inhibit germination (e.g. potatoes) and decrease the ripening process of fruits to increase the preservation period.
The benefits of Food Irradiation?
Food irradiation is safe and has many benefits. The safety of health as well as the advantage of economy for food irradiation have full recognition of organizations in the United Nations including: World Health Organization (WHO), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Does irradiation make food radioactive?
Irradiated food does not come into direct contact with the radioactive source, so it cannot become “radioactive food”, meaning that there is no side effect on the user.
Does irradiation create poison for food and humans?
Because of the absence of toxicity and no change in chemical composition, irradiated food does not cause adverse effects on human health. The production facilities using irradiation technology must also follow a very stringent and secure technical process, thus not causing any negative impact on the human environment.
Does irradiation reduce the nutritional value of food?
The irradiation does not reduce the nutritional value of food; instead, it retains the vitamins, amino acids, and fatty acids contained in the food. It is confirmed that irradiation does not reduce nutrients in food, according to a number of studies carried out by the Committee taken from members of FAO, WHO, and IAEA.
