Ranking of the most traded fish species in the EU

According to the new “EU Fish Market Trends” report published by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries at the end of December, household survey data from EU member states show the diversity of fish and seafood choices consumers make in retail stores, markets and online platforms. The report covers not only fresh fish but also frozen and processed seafood.

Below is a list of the three most popular fish and seafood in each EU member state, based on survey results:

  • Denmark: Cod, dab (flatfish), halibut

  • Germany: Pollock, carp, cod

  • Ireland: Cod, halibut, haddock

  • Italy: Anchovies, molluscs, grouper

  • Netherlands: Cod, herring, mackerel

  • Poland: Carp, mackerel, salmon

  • Portugal: Bivalves, grouper, cod

  • Spain: Cod, halibut, dorado

  • Sweden: Cod, halibut, haddock

The report does not specify the time of the survey, but shows clear differences in consumption preferences between countries, reflecting consumer habits and preferences for different types of fish in the EU region.

These statistics help seafood producers and distributors better understand the demand and consumption trends in EU countries, thereby being able to adjust production and marketing strategies to meet market demand.
