Vietnam's canned tuna exports are increasing rapidly
According to statistics from Vietnam Customs, since 2021, Vietnam's canned tuna exports have been on an upward trend. Export turnover increased from $169 million in 2021 to $255 million in 2023, an increase of 51%.
Entering 2024, Vietnam's canned tuna exports have shown a faster monthly growth rate. In the first four months of 2024 alone, exports of this product group from Vietnam increased by 51% compared to the same period in 2023.
After facing record-high inflation and interest rates, consumers tend to tighten their spending. As a result, demand for low-cost products like canned tuna has increased.
Currently, Vietnam's canned tuna products have reached more than 65 markets. Among these, the US, EU, and Israel are the top three import markets. Exports to these markets have all shown high growth, with increases of 88%, 35%, and 141% respectively.
In the EU market alone, exports of canned tuna to most countries in the bloc have increased. Germany, Poland, and the Netherlands are the leading importers of this product group from Vietnam. Among them, Germany and Poland have increased their imports, while the Netherlands has shown a declining trend. The preferential tax benefits under the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) have boosted Vietnam's canned tuna exports to this market in the early months of the year.
Additionally, besides Israel, exports of canned tuna to other Middle Eastern countries such as Lebanon and Egypt are also experiencing high growth rates.
Vietnam has more than 140 companies participating in canned tuna exports. Among them, the five largest exporters are Tuna Vietnam, accounting for 10%; Mariso Vietnam, accounting for 8%; Yueh Chyang Canned Food, accounting for 8%; AHFISHCO, accounting for 7%; and Highland Dragon, accounting for 6%.
