Vietnamese clams are exported to over 30 markets around the world
After a decline in February and March 2024, Vietnam's clam exports rebounded in April, increasing by 27% compared to the same period in 2023. For the cumulative first four months of 2024, Vietnam's clam exports reached over 26 million USD, up 1% from the same period in 2023.
Vietnam primarily exports brown clams, frozen boiled white clams, and clam meat. Vietnamese clam products are exported to over 30 markets worldwide, with the EU, the US, and China being the largest importers, accounting for 91% of total export value.
This year, the EU and the US did not increase their imports of Vietnamese clams, and the US even reduced its imports. In contrast, China and Hong Kong showed an upward trend, with an increase of 508% compared to the same period.
In terms of consumption, the Asia-Pacific bivalve market is the largest, with China being the biggest consumer. Besides China, Japan and India are the largest markets in the Asia-Pacific region. The demand for bivalves in the Asia-Pacific is driven by a growing population, rising incomes, and increasing awareness of the health benefits of seafood consumption. The European bivalve market is the second largest in the world.
This year, Bến Tre clams were once again recognized by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) for sustainable fishing practices, marking the third time Bến Tre clams have received this certification. Meanwhile, global demand for "green label" seafood products is increasing, especially in the EU market.
Therefore, this presents an opportunity for Vietnam to increase exports of high-value clam products.
