Tuna exports “accelerate” in Portugal
If in 2023, Vietnam's tuna export orders to Portugal were still small and intermittent every month, in 2024 the trend has changed. According to statistics from Vietnam Customs, since the beginning of the year, Vietnam's tuna orders have been exported to Portugal continuously and the value is getting higher and higher. In the first 10 months of 2024, the export value to this market reached nearly 9.4 million USD, an increase of 380% over the same period in 2023.
Currently, Portugal is the 6th largest tuna import market of Vietnam in the EU.
In terms of geographical location, Portugal is a country located in southwestern Europe. Although it is a small country with a population of 10 million, it is a gateway to the world with an important geostrategic position in the center of the triangle of Europe, Africa, and Latin America. Therefore, in recent years, Spanish importers have increased imports through the ports of this country. Specifically, in 2024, Portugal increased imports of other processed tuna products from Vietnam, especially frozen steamed tuna loins. These orders are mostly temporary imports for re-export through Portuguese ports to Vigo, Spain.
The increase in Vietnamese tuna exports to Portugal is not only aimed at the market of this country but also the European and African markets.
Vietnamese tuna products are enjoying tariff incentives from the EVFTA agreement, so export enterprises need to make the most of these incentives to improve their competitiveness in the market.
