Significant increase in meat and cassava imports
The import turnover of three commodity groups—meat and meat products; cassava and cassava products; and toys, sports equipment, and parts—has reached substantial levels with strong growth, leading the Customs authority to include them in the periodic statistical basket starting from March 2026.
In March, 56 major import commodity groups (those with large turnover scales) were included in the statistical basket for periodic disclosure by the Department of Customs, an increase of three groups compared to February 2026.
The three new groups added to the periodic statistical basket of the Customs authority include: Meat and meat products; cassava and cassava products; and toys, sports equipment, and parts.
Previously, the Customs authority tracked the import parameters of these three groups but categorized them under "other goods." However, due to the recent expansion in turnover scale and robust growth, they have been separated into independent commodity groups.
According to the latest statistics, in the first quarter of 2026, Vietnam spent 652.8 million USD on importing meat and meat products, a 25.3% increase compared to the same period last year.
The primary import markets for meat and meat products include India, Russia, Brazil, the United States, and Canada.
Meanwhile, imports of cassava and cassava products reached over 3.8 million tons with a turnover of 505.9 million USD, up 17.8% in volume and 22% in turnover. These commodities are mainly imported from Laos and Cambodia.
For toys, sports equipment, and parts, the import turnover reached 183.4 million USD, a sharp increase of 47.3% year-on-year. The largest source for these imports is China.
Regarding the country's overall import activities in the first quarter of 2026, data from the Department of Customs recorded a total turnover of 126.6 billion USD, a 27% increase (equivalent to an increase of nearly 27 billion USD) compared to the same period in 2025.
The Department of Customs periodically compiles and publicly discloses trade statistics, including:
- Summary information on total turnover and major export/import commodities on a semi-monthly (15 days) and monthly basis.
- Summary information on total turnover and major export/import commodities between Vietnam and its major trading partners on a monthly basis.
