Seafood overcomes difficulties to reach export target of 10 billion USD
The context of 2024 is more difficult than favorable, but with a creative spirit and flexible adaptability, the Vietnamese seafood industry has achieved impressive results with an export value of 10 billion USD.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 10 billion USD seafood export celebration in 2024 held on the evening of December 23, 2024 in Ho Chi Minh City, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Sac, President of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), emphasized that the context of 2024 is more difficult than favorable, but with a creative spirit and flexible adaptability, the Vietnamese seafood industry has achieved impressive results with an export value of 10 billion USD, an increase of 12.7% compared to 2023.
Key products all had positive growth such as: shrimp 4 billion USD, an increase of 16.7%; tuna nearly 1 billion USD, an increase of 17%; pangasius 2 billion USD, an increase of 9.6%.
The President of VASEP said that the above figures show that the seafood industry is on the right track in sustainable development and increasing the added value of products.
Vietnamese seafood enterprises have gradually promoted the application of science and technology in the farming and processing process, not only improving productivity and product quality but also contributing to expanding export markets. These advances have affirmed the position of the Vietnamese seafood industry, enhancing its competitiveness in the international arena.
Sharing the joy with the seafood industry, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Hang said that VASEP and its member enterprises have achieved impressive achievements, especially in the context of the world economy with many unfavorable factors, still reaching a record seafood export milestone of 10 billion USD, maintaining the position of the world's 3rd largest seafood exporter after China and Norway, a market covering all 5 continents.
According to Ms. Hang, aquaculture is one of the key agricultural export sectors, with high competitiveness, leading in green transformation and sustainable development of Vietnam.
However, there is still a lot of room for development because according to the World Food Organization (FAO), the global seafood market is estimated to be nearly 180 billion USD and maintains a very positive growth rate. Therefore, we have every basis to set a further target, not just 10 billion USD...
Congratulating the export results of the aquaculture industry, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien shared that in order to achieve the export results of 10 billion USD in 2024, it can be said that the aquaculture industry has received direct and close attention from the Government, the Prime Minister, leaders of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, ministries, branches, and localities in orientation and direction.

In addition, there is the participation of associations and businesses in the industry in organizing production, processing, constantly improving product quality, and diversifying markets.
Affirming that the above results will create export momentum for businesses in 2025, Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien said that in 2025, there will continue to be new challenges for the seafood industry, in which, resolving the IUU yellow card, adapting to climate change, environmental pollution and market barriers will be important goals.
“I also believe that, with determination and creativity, the Vietnamese seafood industry will surpass the 10 billion USD mark in 2025, and move towards the target of 11 billion USD, in the context of improved raw material sources and expanded export markets.
In particular, improving product quality and improving the reputation of businesses will help us increase market share and affirm the position of Vietnamese seafood in the international market,” Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien emphasized.
