Many agricultural products "explode" in export value
With the results achieved and the efforts and determination of all levels of sectors, localities as well as each enterprise, agricultural, forestry and fishery exports will achieve the set goals.
Agricultural, forestry and fishery exports bring in 57 billion USD
The export turnover of agricultural, forestry and fishery products in November is estimated at 5.3 billion USD, bringing the total export turnover in the first 11 months of this year to nearly 57 billion USD, up 19% over the same period last year. Of which, agricultural product exports reached nearly 30 billion USD, up 23%; aquatic products reached more than 9 billion USD, up nearly 12% and forestry products reached nearly 16 billion USD, up nearly 20%. These are 3 groups of goods with a trade balance in surplus.
Notably, there are 7 items with a surplus of over 1 billion USD, including: Wood and wood products, vegetables, coffee, rice, shrimp, tra fish and pepper.
Many items set export records
The results of the 11 months show that the target of this year's export turnover reaching a new record of 60 - 62 billion USD is considered feasible by all parties. It can be seen that most of the key products have high growth. In which, vegetables and coffee have contributed significantly to the total export turnover of the entire agricultural sector.
Durian is a strategic product of the fruit and vegetable industry. At this time, the main durian season has ended, but Vietnam still has off-season products for export. Durian alone accounts for 50% of Vietnam's total fruit and vegetable export turnover. It is forecasted that durian exports for the whole year may reach 3.5 billion USD.
Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen - General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association commented: "More than 90% of our durian exports go to the Chinese market. I believe that next year we will have new records, new products, such as frozen durian, coconut, grapefruit".
"Vietnamese fruits have a great opportunity in the UK as Vietnam is on the list of 20 countries exempted or reduced from border checks when entering the UK due to its efforts. The current issue, in my opinion, is the need to improve marketing efforts to better understand European consumption trends as well as how they recognize green products and green businesses...", said Mr. Matthew Albon Crouch - Attaché for Agriculture, Food and Beverage, British Embassy in Hanoi.
In addition, the coffee industry has also continuously reached new peaks in both export turnover and selling price. Phuc Sinh Group maintains a fairly stable export output of about 60,000 tons of coffee each year, but revenue in 2024 increased by 40% thanks to high coffee prices. In addition to the main market of Europe, accounting for 65%, this year the company has also exploited many new markets.
Mr. Nguyen Huy Hung - Business Director of Phuc Sinh Group said: "In 2024, we will expand to very large markets in Asia. Especially Indonesia and countries in the Middle East have increased their coffee purchases in Vietnam. We focus on high-quality products, deeply processed Arabica products, high-quality Robusta. We hope that in 2025, sales will grow by about 25%".
It is forecasted that coffee exports in 2024 will reach the 6 billion USD mark. In particular, the EU's law banning the import of agricultural products related to deforestation into the EU (EUDR) has urged the Vietnamese coffee industry to develop towards high quality and sustainability.
Mr. Thai Nhu Hiep - Vice President of the Vietnam Coffee - Cocoa Association said: "Vietnam is one of the first pioneering countries to transparently trace the origin. With the EUDR passed, Vietnam's advantage is that we can prove that our coffee is not at risk". According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, other strong agricultural products such as rice, cashew nuts, etc. also recorded unprecedented growth. The last month of 2024 will be a time of drastic acceleration for industries with the latest goal of bringing export turnover to the 60 billion USD mark.
Efforts to form new key industries
In 2024, Vietnam will mark the expansion of its export market when frozen durian, fresh coconut, farmed crocodiles, etc. are officially exported to China. Localities such as Tra Vinh and Ben Tre are implementing planning and solutions to make coconut a key export product.
Tra Vinh has the second largest coconut growing area in the country with nearly 30,000 hectares, but the value of coconut is not high due to unstable quality and productivity. The whole province has 8 enterprises and coconut processing facilities for export, but they are mainly small-scale.
Wax coconut has high value, but the output is not enough to meet demand. The province is researching new coconut varieties, improving quality and aiming for organic production, hoping to develop coconut into a billion-dollar export product.
This year, with the signing and entry into force of three Protocols, along with the involvement of the Government, Ministries and sectors in logistics and smart border gates, the export of agricultural, forestry and fishery products in the last months of the year is expected to continue to increase in value.
