Longan exports soar

06/05/2026

In the first four months of the year, longan exports saw the highest growth among fruits, reaching USD 3 million, which is 13.4 times higher than the same period last year.

Data from the General Department of Vietnam Customs shows significant growth in fruit and vegetable exports during the first four months of the year, with the fruit sector being the brightest spot. Among fruits, longan stands out with outstanding growth, achieving the highest increase in this category.

In four months, the export value of longan to various countries reached USD 3 million, increasing more than 13.4 times compared to the same period last year. The United States, China, and Japan are the three primary markets that have increased their purchases of Vietnamese longan.

Enterprises report that the improving quality of longan is the main reason this product attracts customers in various countries. This year, due to the impact of climate change, the production and quality of longan from countries like Thailand, India, and China have declined. This has created favorable conditions for Vietnamese longan to compete more strongly in the international market.

Thanks to this increase, the export price of longan has been maintained at a stable level of VND 12,000-18,000 per kilogram at the farm, allowing farmers to earn a profit of VND 5-10 million per sao (a traditional unit of area). In traditional markets in Ho Chi Minh City, the retail price of longan ranges from VND 40,000 to 60,000 per kilogram, an increase of about 10-20% compared to the same period last year.

The Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association reports that longan is currently among the top five fruit trees with the largest cultivation area in the country, with over 80,000 hectares and an average annual production of 600,000 tons. In the past two years, fresh Vietnamese longan has competed more strongly with Thai products in the Chinese market, thanks to improved quality and compliance with export market standards.

In 2023, Vietnam exported more than USD 14 million worth of longan, nearly 2.5 times higher than in 2022. With the current strong growth momentum, longan exports are expected to reach USD 16-20 million this year. From July to September, Vietnamese longan will be in its peak season, and production is forecasted to increase significantly.
