4 commodity groups with increased turnover of 1 billion USD or more

From the beginning of the year to July 15, there were 4 export commodity groups with an increase in turnover of 1 billion USD or more, according to the latest information from the General Department of Customs.

Specifically, Vietnam's total export turnover in the first period of July (1-15/7/2024) reached 16.26 billion USD, down 9.4% compared to the second period of June 2024. Some commodity groups decreased sharply such as: computers, electronic products and components decreased by 28.4%; phones of all kinds and components decreased by 9.9%; iron and steel of all kinds decreased by 29.8%...

However, from the beginning of the year to July 15, 2024, Vietnam's total export turnover still grew quite well compared to the same period last year with a turnover of 207.25 billion USD, up 15.2%.

Notably, there were 4 commodity groups with an increase in turnover of 1 billion USD or more. These are computers, electronic products and components with turnover reaching 36.32 billion USD, an increase of 8.19 billion USD; machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts reaching 25.36 billion USD, an increase of 4.06 billion USD; phones of all kinds and components reaching 29.57 billion USD, an increase of 3.48 billion USD; wood and wood products reaching 8.12 billion USD, an increase of 1.53 billion USD.

Thus, the additional turnover of the above 4 groups of goods alone is 17.26 billion USD, accounting for over 63% of the total additional turnover of the country's exports.

If in the last 5 months of the year, our country maintains the export growth rate as it has since the beginning of the year, the scale of import-export turnover in 2024 is likely to set a new record with a figure that can reach around 380 billion USD.

Vietnam's squid and octopus exports earn nearly 290 million USD

According to statistics from the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), Vietnam's squid and octopus exports in the first half of the year earned more than 289 million USD, down slightly by 1% compared to the same period last year. Of which, squid exports were not very positive, down 6%, earning 157 million USD.

In contrast, octopus exports saw a 6% increase, earning 132 million USD in the first half of 2024. Vietnamese squid and octopus are now exported to 58 markets, of which South Korea is the largest market with 114 million USD, up 13% over the same period last year.

Japan is the second largest market with 68 million USD, down 12%. China and Hong Kong ranked third with 30 million USD, up 10% over the same period in 2023.

Vietnam is the largest supplier of frozen octopus to South Korea, accounting for 43% of the market share, followed by China in second place with 41% of the market share.

Korea mainly imports from Vietnam frozen cut octopus, frozen whole cleaned octopus, frozen cut octopus, frozen processed octopus, skinless dried squid, frozen cleaned processed squid, frozen sushi squid, frozen cleaned cuttlefish fillets, frozen cleaned whole cuttlefish, frozen pinecone cuttlefish, frozen button squid...

In the first 7 months of the year, the total export turnover of agricultural, forestry and fishery products reached 34.27 billion USD.

According to the latest report of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in the first 7 months of the year, Vietnam achieved a trade surplus of 14 billion USD, total export turnover of agricultural, forestry and fishery products reached 34.27 billion, up 18.8%; imports 24.85 billion USD; trade surplus 9.42 billion USD, up 60%.

In July alone, agricultural, forestry and fishery exports reached 5.11 billion USD, up 18.2% over the same period. Of which, main agricultural products were 2.62 billion USD, up 25.2%); forestry products were 1.4 billion USD, up 15.8%; aquatic products were 880 million USD, up 13.2%; livestock was 47.4 million USD, up 9.3%.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said that exports in the first 6 months of the year reached 29.2 billion USD, up 19% over the same period in 2023, and the trade surplus reached nearly 8.3 billion USD, up 62%. By July, the total export turnover reached nearly 34.3 billion USD, the trade surplus reached 9.5 billion USD, up 60% over the same period last year.

Regarding export markets, the US, China and Japan continue to be the 3 largest export markets for Vietnamese agricultural, forestry and fishery products; of which export value to the US increased by 21.6%, China increased by 11.3% and Japan increased by 4%.

Lobster exports to China grow strongly

According to VASEP, in the first 6 months of this year, Vietnam's seafood exports to China reached nearly 690 million USD, up 8.4% over the same period last year.

Pangasius still accounts for the largest proportion of Vietnam's total seafood exports to China at 35%, reaching more than 243 million USD, down 7.4% over the same period last year.

The second largest export item was lobster with nearly 122 million USD, up 174% over the same period last year and accounting for nearly 18% of the total. Whiteleg shrimp export turnover to China decreased by 10% over the same period last year, reaching only 117 million USD; tiger shrimp export also decreased by nearly 30% over the same period last year, reaching 38.5 million USD. Exports of some marine fish species to China also decreased in export turnover in the first 6 months of this year.
