Dragon fruit export turnover exceeds 100 million USD

06/05/2026

Dragon fruit exports have recorded positive signals of recovery as demand from markets such as Thailand and the Middle East has risen sharply. In the first two months of the year, dragon fruit exports reached approximately 108.5 million USD, an increase of 14%, indicating signs of improvement following years of decline.

According to data from the Department of Customs, dragon fruit export turnover in February reached over 60 million USD, up 63% year-on-year. Cumulatively for the first two months, this figure stood at approximately 108.5 million USD, a 14% increase, reflecting a clear recovery momentum after a series of declining years.

Notably, exports to Thailand reached over 9.2 million USD, increasing more than 2.7 times compared to the same period, making this market one of the fastest-growing destinations.

Beyond the ASEAN region, demand in the Middle East has also risen significantly. The UAE market alone recorded an increase of over 57%, contributing to the expansion of outlets for Vietnamese dragon fruit.

According to exporting enterprises, the primary cause stems from seasonal factors. The early months of the year often coincide with the Lunar New Year—a time when fruit consumption demand surges in many markets. Meanwhile, this is the off-season for many dragon fruit-growing nations, leading to a decrease in global supply and creating a competitive advantage for Vietnamese products.

To meet market demand, many fruit growers have applied the technique of nighttime lighting to stimulate off-season flowering, helping to maintain supply during the early months of the year. Typically, the peak season for dragon fruit in Vietnam lasts from May to September, when trees flower naturally due to longer daylight hours.

Despite expanding into many new markets, China continues to play the role of the largest consumption market for Vietnamese dragon fruit. In the first two months of 2026, exports to this market reached approximately 66.5 million USD, up nearly 5% year-on-year, showing signals of stabilization after a previous period of decline.

China has long been Vietnam's largest dragon fruit import partner. In the past, this market at times accounted for over 60% of Vietnam's total dragon fruit export turnover. Conversely, exports to the United States continue to decline due to barriers regarding technical standards and costs.

These developments show that the dragon fruit industry is effectively capitalizing on seasonal advantages to recover exports. However, to maintain sustainable growth, diversifying markets and improving product quality remain urgent requirements for the future.
