Chinese Market: Wide Door but Hard to Enter
Chinese people have a huge demand for agricultural products in general and fruits in particular, however, meeting the demands of this market is not easy.
Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has received a number of notices from the General Department of Customs of China regarding violations of plant quarantine of shipments of bananas, jackfruit, mangoes, longans, dragon fruits and durians exported from Vietnam.
The warning errors include: Quality, food hygiene and safety (use of food additives exceeding the permitted threshold; mold; pathogenic bacteria); Documents accompanying the goods (lack of goods certification; goods not in accordance with the certification/certificate; goods not yet permitted for import); Product packaging labels do not meet import regulations and requirements...
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development believes that the reason is that the inspection and supervision work in growing areas and packaging facilities is lax, leading to ineffective control of plant quarantine objects of interest to the importing country.
Mr. Nguyen Khac Tien - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ameii Vietnam Joint Stock Company - a company with many years of experience exporting agricultural products to China, said: The growth rate of the Chinese market for Vietnamese agricultural products is continuously increasing. However, the consumption trend of the world in general and China in particular is returning to quality, green, clean and safe agricultural products. If we do not change, it is clear that the room for export is very difficult.

Mr. Nguyen Khac Tien emphasized the important role of understanding market tastes.
All businesses as well as people, the state support mechanism has created an open corridor for Vietnamese agricultural products to take off higher and further. But to do that depends mainly on the efforts of farmers and businesses in ensuring the quality of agricultural products. On the other hand, we also need to produce according to market signals. When exporting to the Chinese market, we must carefully study consumer habits, even packaging and labeling regulations.
Meanwhile, Mr. Nguyen Do Anh Tuan - Director of the Department of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development affirmed that the Chinese market is a large and potential market because it is right next to us, and the taste and consumption habits are quite similar. However, if the word "trust" is not ensured, the wide door will become a narrow door. To fully exploit their advantages, businesses need to strengthen their connections, connect with each other, and do better logistics to help reduce costs and increase efficiency when exporting.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development recommends that businesses need to regularly update and comply with regulations on quality standards, testing, quarantine, packaging, and traceability of the Chinese market. In addition, having a logistics strategy and building warehouses for agricultural products in border localities helps preserve them longer and maintain good quality when the delivery deadline comes.
To increase agricultural product exports to China, in addition to the requirements on quality and food safety according to regulations, exporting businesses need to pay close attention to the needs of each stage of this market. For example, China's dragon fruit import turnover is showing signs of slowing down and gradually decreasing because the development of dragon fruit production areas in this country has partially met consumer demand. Therefore, if they want to maintain dragon fruit export turnover, producers and businesses must create greater competitive advantages in terms of price, sweetness, and color for the product.
Or with durian products, China is expanding exploitation from many sources with different transportation methods, so Vietnam wants to dominate the market and needs to improve quality, reduce costs and maintain product reputation.

Durian exports need to focus on quality and price to increase competitiveness.
Currently, the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development are implementing solutions to promote official exports to the Chinese market. These include building an official export strategy, an industry development strategy, brand building, and trade promotion. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development actively supports localities in building production areas and large-scale, concentrated specialized farming areas based on market signals.
