Bac Ninh lychees maintain exports to demanding markets

26/05/2026

Although production has declined due to adverse weather conditions, Bac Ninh lychees have maintained high quality standards and continue to secure access to demanding export markets such as the United States and Canada.

Despite lower lychee output in 2026 compared to 2025, Bac Ninh Province has succeeded in maintaining stable exports to highly regulated markets including the European Union, the United States, and Canada through proactive and coordinated technical measures, strict pesticide control, and comprehensive quality management.

The 2026 lychee season in Bac Ninh was significantly affected by unusual weather patterns.

During the flower bud differentiation period, temperatures remained higher than the multi-year average, while prolonged periods of high humidity combined with intermittent drizzle negatively affected the flowering and fruit-setting process, resulting in lower flowering and fruit-bearing rates compared to the 2025 season.

However, thanks to decisive provincial guidance and timely technical support provided to growers for implementing safe production processes, the quality of this year’s lychee crop has remained well preserved.

The fruit has demonstrated strong visual appeal, bright coloration, thick flesh, and a rich sweet flavor while fully meeting food safety requirements imposed by importing countries.

From the beginning of the season, the Bac Ninh Department of Agriculture and Environment directed the Sub-Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection to establish a 21-member task force dedicated to supervising export-oriented lychee production.

This team has closely monitored key lychee-growing areas and provided direct technical guidance to farmers on strict cultivation procedures, proper pesticide application practices, prioritization of biological crop protection products, and integrated pest management (IPM).

Particular attention has been paid to the province’s 243 lychee growing area codes covering more than 17,000 hectares designated for export.

Technical authorities have conducted inspections, pest monitoring activities, and lychee sample collection for pesticide residue analysis prior to harvest to assess compliance with phytosanitary and food safety standards required by each export market.

At the same time, management of growing area codes and packing facility codes has continued to be strictly enforced.

Cooperatives and enterprises involved in pre-processing and packaging have been required to fully comply with the specific technical standards of each destination market.

Thanks to early-season product quality control, both domestic consumption and export activities have proceeded smoothly.

As of May 20, 2026, total lychee harvest volume allocated for exports to premium markets such as the United States and North America, including Canada, had exceeded 50 tonnes, of which 20 tonnes were exported specifically to the Canadian market.

For the United States market, export consignments are currently completing phytosanitary procedures in accordance with import regulations prior to undergoing irradiation treatment.

According to assessments by Bac Ninh’s agricultural authorities, although total output has declined due to weather-related impacts, the province’s ability to maintain stable exports to demanding markets clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of its transition from traditional farming practices toward safe agricultural production focused on higher quality, value creation, and brand development.

This transformation is helping elevate the international standing of Bac Ninh lychees.

In the coming period, Bac Ninh Province will continue accelerating the development of lychee-growing areas certified under VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards.

The province also plans to expand the application of digital technologies in growing area code management and scale up the use of electronic cultivation logs to strengthen traceability and food safety monitoring.

These efforts are expected to further enhance competitiveness and progressively reinforce the Bac Ninh lychee brand in international markets.
