The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) forecasts that seafood export growth in the second half of 2024 will be about 15% higher than the same period last year. Therefore, aquaculture and fisheries are making efforts to increase production to meet domestic consumption and export demand.
INCREASE AQUACULTURE PRODUCTION
According to the General Statistics Office, the estimated aquatic product output in July 2024 was 841.1 thousand tons, up 2.2% over the same period last year. Shrimp output harvested in July 2024 increased compared to the same period last year due to the harvest season. Whiteleg shrimp output is estimated at 93.1 thousand tons, up 4.1% over the same period last year; black tiger shrimp output is estimated at 29.1 thousand tons, up 2.4%.
In July 2024, the output of exploited aquatic products in the country is estimated at 350.4 thousand tons, up 0.6% over the same period last year. Of which, the output of exploited fish is estimated at 280.1 thousand tons, up 0.7%; shrimp is estimated at 11.5 thousand tons, equivalent to the same period last year; other aquatic products are estimated at 58.8 thousand tons, up 0.2%. The output of exploited marine aquatic products is estimated at 336.2 thousand tons, up 0.7% over the same period last year.
In the first 7 months of 2024, the total aquatic product output is estimated at 5,225.8 thousand tons, up 2.6% over the same period last year. Including: Fish reached 3,760.2 thousand tons, up 2.5%; shrimp reached 699.0 thousand tons, up 3.9%; other aquatic products 766.6 thousand tons, up 2.1% over the same period last year.
For the forestry sector, the area of newly planted forests nationwide in July 2024 is estimated at 13.8 thousand hectares, up 6.9% over the same period last year. Some provinces have high afforestation progress: Quang Binh increased by 7.3%, Nghe An increased by 6.4%, especially Yen Bai and Phu Tho increased by 8 times and 43 times respectively (111 hectares and 593 hectares respectively). In addition, the number of scattered forest trees reached 6.5 million, up 4% over the same period last year.
The output of exploited planted forest timber in July 2024 reached 1,945.7 thousand m3, up 7.8% due to the increasing trend of raw wood prices, people increased exploitation of timber to harvest age. Some localities had high timber exploitation output compared to the same period last year: Yen Bai increased by 17.4%; Tuyen Quang increased by 12.7%; Nghe An increased by 9.7%; Quang Ngai increased by 7.9%; Quang Ninh increased by 7.7%.
In the first 7 months of 2024, the area of newly concentrated planted forests is estimated at 143.4 thousand hectares, up 4.6% over the same period last year; the number of scattered forest trees reached 51.1 million trees, up 3%; the output of exploited timber reached 11,943.2 thousand m3, up 7.1%.
The damaged forest area in July 2024 was 80.5 hectares, down 61.1% over the same period last year. Of which, 49.7 hectares of forest were cut down and destroyed, down 64.1%; the burnt forest area was 30.8 hectares, down 55.1%. In the first 7 months of 2024, the whole country had 1,303 hectares of damaged forest, down 5.3% over the same period last year. Of which, 588.0 hectares of forest were cut down and destroyed, down 23.0%; the burnt forest area was 715.0 hectares, up 16.8%.
RICE PRODUCTION EFFORT
The General Statistics Office's report recorded that by mid-July, the whole country had planted 1,902.2 thousand hectares of summer-autumn rice, equal to 99.6% of the same period last year. Of which, the northern localities reached 173.6 thousand hectares, equal to 100.6%; the southern localities reached 1,728.6 thousand hectares, equal to 99.5%, and the Mekong Delta alone reached 1,465.9 thousand hectares, equal to 99.5%.
The progress of sowing summer-autumn rice this year is slower than the same period last year, mainly due to the impact of drought and salinity intrusion since the beginning of the year. Up to now, most of the summer-autumn rice is in the growth, tillering, and heading stages. The area harvested for early summer-autumn rice reached 510.6 thousand hectares, equal to 105.7% of the same period last year, of which the Mekong Delta harvested 496.6 thousand hectares, equal to 105.6%.
Regarding the autumn-winter rice crop production, the General Statistics Office said that as of July 15, 2024, the Mekong Delta had planted 297.1 thousand hectares of autumn-winter rice, equal to 110.7% of the same period last year, mainly due to some localities increasing the area based on the early harvest of the summer-autumn crop in 2024. Currently, the first autumn-winter rice crop is in the seedling, tillering to panicle formation stages, growing and developing well.
Due to the rainy weather, high humidity and temperature, favorable for the development of fungal diseases, the Department of Agriculture of localities needs to advise farmers to regularly visit the fields and implement good measures to prevent and control pests and diseases to ensure the best autumn-winter rice crop production.
While the Mekong Delta is currently focusing on summer-autumn and autumn-winter rice production, the Red River Delta is focusing on winter-spring rice production. According to the General Statistics Office, as of July 15, 2024, the whole country has planted 1,206.9 thousand hectares of winter-spring rice, equal to 99.5% of the same period last year. Of which, the northern localities planted 852.5 thousand hectares, equal to 99.3%; the southern localities planted 354.4 thousand hectares, equivalent to the same period last year.
In the second half of July 2024, heavy rains occurred over a large area, causing flooding in many rice areas in the Red River Delta. Preliminary statistics show that nearly 60 thousand hectares of rice were affected.
In Nam Dinh province alone, it is estimated that during the heavy rains from July 14 to 20, the whole province had about 35,000 hectares of rice (50% of the area) flooded and had to be replanted and pruned, concentrated in the districts of Hai Hau, Y Yen, Nghia Hung, Nam Truc, Truc Ninh.
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Nam Dinh has directed a plan to save rice. Rice areas flooded for less than 48 hours are likely to suffer little damage, wait 3-4 days after the water recedes to take care of them according to the instructions. Rice areas that are completely flooded and drooping for 48-72 hours are likely to suffer about 30-70% damage, so it is necessary to take advantage of the remaining rice seedlings and spare seedlings to replant or transplant them. Replanting and replanting to compensate for dead rice areas must be completed before August 8, 2024.
During the flood season after storm No. 2, on July 22-24, 2024, data from the Department of Dykes and Natural Disaster Prevention showed that about 26,000 hectares of rice were flooded. The localities with severe flooding include: Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh, Ha Nam, Hanoi and Bac Giang. Hundreds of drainage works have been operated to save rice in recent days.
According to forecasts, in the coming time, the weather will be complicated and unpredictable, with the possibility of many unusual storms and tropical depressions in the northern localities and severe heat and drought in the southern localities.
Therefore, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has recommended that localities need to strengthen production guidance, guide people on rice care measures; maintain regular water levels, proactively prevent flooding for rice in a timely manner, in order to ensure domestic food security and ensure supply to meet rice exports.
“The output of Pangasius harvested in July 2024 is estimated at 139,000 tons, up 4.5% over the same period last year due to the stable price of raw Pangasius at a high level and signs of recovery in Pangasius exports, so fish farmers and enterprises have adjusted their farming output accordingly to meet export demand”.General Statistics Office.
